To qualify for the boiler scrappage scheme applicants must live in England, and be either a homeowner or a private tenant. Landlords of multiple properties can apply, as long as each boiler scrappage scheme voucher is assigned to a different property.
For applicants under 60 years old the boiler needs to be in working order and be the main source of heat for the home. If you are over 60 you can apply for the scheme regardless of whether the boiler works or not. However, it still needs to be the main boiler used to heat the home.
The government has introduced this scheme to persuade households in England with the least efficient heating systems to upgrade them. The government have set ambitious targets to reduce the nations carbon emissions produced by inefficient heating systems, and hopes that by offering home owners £400 will persuade them to become more energy efficient and eco friendly.
